Why is my rug shedding?Updated 25 days ago

You might notice some shedding from your new rug. Don’t worry—this is normal for rugs made with natural materials! The shedding amount and duration varies by foot traffic and rug construction, but is typical for the first 6-9 months. Shedding will lessen and ultimately stop with time.

When cleaning your rug, we recommend vacuuming with a non-rotary head or suction attachment. The beater bar, or spinning brush, in rotary vacuums can increase shedding, damage rug fibers, and reduce your rug’s lifespan.

For our washable wool styles, you can expect to see some fluff left in your machine after the first few washes. This is because the yarn continues to naturally open after washing, making the rug fluffier over time.

If you’d like to avoid shedding altogether, we recommend materials such as polyester or cotton, as they are less likely to shed. In particular, you can check out our easy-care rugs made of polyester here, which are specifically designed to have low to no shedding.
